PR Week - Agencies ally to aid biofuels debate

The body representing the UK’s renewable energy suppliers has called in agency help to increase public support for biofuels, seen as an important means of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

Phil Hall Associates and public affairs agency Tetra Strategy landed the Renewable Energy Association account following a competitive pitch. It is the first time the association has used an agency.

The agencies are charged with promoting the production of biofuels as an alternative fuel source in the UK. They will attempt to influence public opinion as well as lobbying ministers and officials.

Phil Hall, a former News of the World editor and CEO of Phil Hall Associates, said: ‘Biofuels were considered an exciting proposition two or three years ago but following negative stories in the press we have been brought in to turn opinion around.

‘We will be campaigning for the Government to encourage more companies in the UK to start producing biofuels.’

The Renewable Energy Association was established in 2001. Members include Marks & Spencer, npower, Scottish Power and British Energy.

Biofuels include ethanol, diesel and other liquid fuels made from processing plant material and crops such as corn, sugarcane and rapeseed. Opponents of biofuels claim they can harm wildlife.

Tetra was set up by James O’Keefe earlier this year after he quit as MD of Good Relations Political (PRWeek, 27 June).
